Why are zeolites made ?

Synthetic zeolites combine a number of unique and adjustable properties

Synthetic zeolites combine a number of unique and adjustable properties like the capability of performing ion exchange processes, of selectively adsorbing molecules from mixtures of gases or liquids and play an important role as catalyst in a number of important technical processes. Depending on their crystal structure and chemical composition one of these three properties may be of greater technical importance than the others.

Because of their specific and adjustable adsorptive properties synthetic zeolites are often referred to as ‘molecular sieves’
